Economy Affects Some Walmart Overnight RVing

An RV couple on their way to Quartzsite from Canada recently arrived bleary-eyed and a bit dismayed. Their usual routine was to stop at Walmart, do a bit of shopping, and overnight on the lot before hitting the road next day. Much to their surprise, several Walmarts turned them down on their request for overnighting. It seems the economy may be the culprit.

How so? In one area, Walmart staffers explained that as the economy had soured and folks had lost their homes, some had “moved in” more-or-less permanently onto their parking lots. While store employees and management empathised with the plight of these folks–and with “passing through” RVers, they just felt they couldn’t become an encampment for folks that were staying more than one night, and hence, put out the “unwelcome mat.”
