Oregon Park Looks for Camp Hosts–With a Twist

As RVers are abandoning the desert southwest, we wonder where on earth they’d want to go while there’s still snow on the ground up north. Some are heading out for spring and summer pastures. Looking for a camp host position? We spotted a “position available” post in an Oregon newspaper. “Seeking a volunteer camp host,” read the piece.

What the story didn’t mention is that while the campground is open but a few months a year, the host the county wants stays on all year–in a county provided mobile home on the park grounds. Not your typical “camp host” position desired by an RVer, we mentioned to a county employee by telephone. She faltered and confided, ‘Well, we’re really broke.” Us regular old RVers might still have a place here–the county could use “relief hosts,” but because of the county’s financial position, they can’t afford to pay you. So what else is new? Freebie hosting is a way of life in most camp host positions.

The host position–or positions (depending on how you look at it)–is at Amacher Park, which sits along the North Umpquah River near Interstate 5 and Highway 99. It’s a 30 site park and the host will do the usual: Register guests, clean up restrooms, and provide an on-site sense of security.

For more information, visit this website. Or give the county park office a call and get informed at (541) 957-7001.
